5 Things Google Doesn't Want You to Know

Google Adwords, the final frontier, the novice internet
marketer's best friend!

But is it really?

Google can make you or break you and according to their own
data, 7 out of 10 are broken. This isn't because Google
doesn't work - it does. You'd better believe it, but like
anything else, you have to know how the game is played
FIRST, not last. There are 5 things Google really doesn't
want you to know. By reading on you'll be among the elite
30% who play Google all the way to the bank.

First let me share some background which may be the biggest
myth of all... consider it a bonus.

Ads are NOT ranked in accordance with the amount bid. Its
kind of like the airline industry. You paid a certain
price for your seat. The person next to paid less, yet
their seat is the same as yours.

Google ranks using two major criteria...

1) Language in the ad and landing page which determines
relevancy (quality) 2) How many times the ad is clicked and
impressions shown

So for example, if your ad is shown from a search (quality)
1000 times and is clicked through only 5 times (CTR) which
is .5% then you're in trouble. However, if your ad is
clicked on 10-20 times which is 1-2%, then you're in
business. Google will then start raising your position and
lowering your cost. Sound crazy? Read on...

Here are the 5 things Google doesn't want you to know:

1. All accounts are defaulted to the content network.

Google ships ads out to other search engines and content
networks. Content network is the default setting for
Google Adwords. Being in the Content network of Google is
like the kissmof death for any marketer and their wallet.
Ads shown here get killed in the click through rate (CTR)
because the user isn't looking to click ads, they are
interested in the website's content- not your ad. Besides
this,on the rare occasion they do click your ad,
conversions are miniscule. This is also where fraud
occurs. Adsense based sites get their ads from the Content
network. Ever heard of click robots?

2. Keywords are too general.

Let's say someone is in the mortgage industry... they
shouldn't use the general word 'mortgage' if they are
selling reverse mortgages or second mortgages. Some people
figure the word 'mortgage' will cover their bases, but it
only drains their bank account.

3. Use quotes and brackets around your keywords.

If a marketer is using the keywords making money on the
internet and doesn't use quotes or brackets, then ANY
search that has ANY of those 5 words in it will trigger an
impression and drive your CTR down dramatically.

If a searcher uses the words 'making chocolate brownies'
your ad pops up. The quotes and brackets specify the
keyword phrase you want to focus on. With quotes, your
search phrase stays intact but may have other words before
or after it. With brackets, the seracher only used those 5
words in the exact order YOU put them in.

4. Put the keyword in the title or body of your ad.

About 80% of marketers don't use the keyword in their ads
at all. I put in the words 'training my dog' and only one
ad was an exact match. It's true that people search based
on what they want to achieve. Training my dog was my goal.
Another example would be 'buy tires'. If 'buy tires' were
in the title or body of the ad this would add to the
quality score.

5. There's a way to cut a deal with other search engines
and bypass the content network.

There are 3 places Google shows ads: a. Home page b.
Content network c. Other search engines

It's not uncommon to have 40% of your ads shipped out to
other search engines. Once you track this activity you can
cut a deal with them and pay half the price per click.

People who have a bad CTR and poor quality score end up
paying more per click for minimal results. Google makes a
fortune on desperate advertisers who are often novices in
the business opportunity industry.

The average click through price for an inexperienced
marketer in this arena is $2.00-$4.00/click. Experienced
marketers only pay $.75-$1.00/click.

Google will alternate quality ads and poor ads on the home
page in order to satisfy both revenue and users search
queries. However, the poor expensive ads are usually
getting low conversion therefore draining your account.

Is it any wonder the stock price was north of $500 a share
earlier this year?

If you're blogging on the Wordpress platform, I'll bet my
entire life savings that the first thing you ever did was
try to install a new Wordpress theme. I'll bet my future
earnings that even today you're still occasionally changing
themes and wasting a lot of time doing minor modifications
that when summed up merely distracts you from blogging
itself.

Yet, it's easy to understand why themes beg for so much
attention. With the correct theme, you can accommodate all
the nifty little widgets and codes, and may also mean
better search engine rankings and tons of fresh traffic
every day.

So what factors do you need to consider to make this whole
theme-hunting business easier? Here are five important
ingredients:

1) Theme Width and Columns

Typically, Wordpress themes come in 2-column or 3-column
formats, with widths ranging from 500 pixels to 960 pixels
wide. If you're blogging for non-profit purposes, a
2-column theme can look more compact and reader-friendly.
Since you have less images of products or links to other
sites to display, you can focus exclusively on the content
without leading readers away from your site.

On the other hand, if you're blogging for profit, you may
want to consider a 3-column Wordpress theme that will be
able to accommodate your Google Adsense, Chitika and Text
Link Ads codes comfortably without squeezing everything in
the content area. 3-column themes allow room for expansion,
but in the event that you've filled up all available space
with ads, then it's time you removed the non-performers and
use only the advertising services that work for that
particular blog.

2) Use of Images and Icons

A theme with images and icons can look good, but it rarely
increases your web traffic or subscriber base. In fact,
most "A-list" bloggers have plain vanilla themes with a
simple logo on top. Reducing the amount of images also
means faster loading time and less stress on your servers.
This vital aspect of server load become apparent only if
you have tens of thousands of visitors a day, but it's
worth designing for the future.

A image-laden theme also distracts readers from the content
itself. This is the reason why blogs like Engadget and Tech
Crunch use images intensively in the content areas to add
value to a post, but the theme itself is simple and rather
minimalist.

Ideally, a theme should allow you to use your own header
image for stronger branding purposes, yet replace images
and icons with links and text, or just not use them at all
unless absolutely necessary.

3) Compatibility with Plugins

Another time-sucking activity is installing plugins that
improve the functionality of your site. There's a plugin
out there for almost everything you want to do with your
blog, but while most of them are free and easily
obtainable, it's not always easy to install the plugins and
insert the codes into your Wordpress theme.

If your theme is too complicated, it may be a headache to
even insert that one line of code you need to make a plugin
work. This is often the case with advanced AJAX-based
Wordpress themes that have too many files and heavy coding.
I've always preferred a simpler themes that stick to the
default Wordpress theme as much as possible, so I can cut
back on the learning curve and just get on with my life.

Remember that the purpose of your blog is to deliver
timely, relevant content to your readers, Any theme that
preserves or improves the reader experience is good, any
theme that subtracts from the experience is bad.

4) Search Engine Optimization

A lot can be said about search engine optimization, but at
the end of the day if you have content worth reading
eventually you'll get the rankings you deserve. However,
that doesn't mean that you don't need SEO; it merely means
that as far as optimization is concerned all you really
need to do is to make sure:

(a) Your title tags are formatted properly, with the name
of the post first followed by the name of the blog - some
themes can do this automatically without modification to
the code or use of a plugin

(b) All your blog content titles use the H1 tag, with the
main keywords used instead of non-descriptive text for
better SEO relevance

(b) Your theme has clean source codes, and if possible all
formatting is linked to an external CSS file which you can
edit independently

5) Plug-And-Play Ease of Use

Can the theme be installed easily on an existing blog
without having to move things around? Can the same theme be
used and customized easily on your other blogs? These are
some additional things you may want to consider when
theme-shopping, especially if every minute of downtime on
your blog may mean lost revenue.

While it's hard to make comparisons due to the sheer amount
of free and paid themes out there, it's still a good idea
to have a test blog site. Test any theme you plan on using,
and make sure your test blog is also fitted with all the
plugins and miscellaneous widgets used on your real blog.
The last thing you want is for your readers start seeing
weird error messages on your blog.

At the end of the day, a theme is just a theme. Instead of
spending your time installing them, it may be wiser to
outsource the task and focus more on your readers.
Alternatively, you may also want to consider buying
"plug-and-play" themes for a reasonable price. Dennis De'

themes around, but if you're short on cash there are
certainly cheaper alternatives.

Adsense has long been one of the best ways to monetize your
website but it's amazing how many people are leaving so
much potential earnings on the table simply by not thinking
about how and where they place their Google ads. In this
article I go through some simple changes that you can make
to your ads that will have a huge impact on the commissions

Use the full allowance of ads available to you on each page

Google allows you to place 3 different regular ad units and
1 link ad unit on each and every page of your website and
it is important to use this allowance to maximize your
chances of clicks. Place them in area's of the page that

has an article, place them to float within the text of the
article. Either at the top of after a couple of paragraphs.
Another great place to place ads is at the bottom of an
article as your visitors are looking for a place to go once
they've finished reading the article. Why not then present
them with some options in the form of some adsense ads. The
key is to blend them into the page so they don't detract
from the content. Another thing to add here is don't use
the horizontal banner ad format. Your site visitors are
blind to them and simply won't click on them. This removes
one of the 4 allowed ads on your page.

Optimize each page for adsense

Research competitive keywords using a keyword research tool
such as Overture's keyword suggestion tool at

or grab a list of the most popular keywords from various
sources and use them in your web site pages where relevant.

for Google to place higher paying ads on your website. The
more popular the keyword or phrase, the higher AdWords

Use Google's Custom Channels for each of the ad units on
your site

Google has provided web site publishers with some great
tools to help you analyze and tweak your adsense ads. Give
each unit a unique name and then analyze the results and
keep tweaking them until you get the desired results from
them. If they are not working were they are placed, move
them. Try changing the colors and integrating them
differently into the text and keep detailed notes on the
changes you are making and see which one's make the biggest
change to your CTR (Click Through Rate).

Blend you Adsense ads into your web pages

This next tip is one of the simplest changes I made but had
a huge effect on my earnings. Make links the same color as
your existing text links. Don't try and make the ads stand
out on the page by using bright colors as all this achieves
is making a big warning sign that these are ads and the
majority of people will then not click on the links. By
making the links the same color as your links, it looks
like they are an extension of your page. If you use the tip
above and optimize each page for specific keywords then the
ads served on the page will be related to the information
on the page and you'll see your CTR shoot up.

Learn from the best

And finally, a tip that I advise for all aspects of website
marketing, not just for adsense purposes is, learn from the
masters. There are plenty of people making thousands of
dollars in adsence earnings every month and have gone
through all the trial and error iterations that need to be
done to find the most successful way to maximize your
adsense earnings. My advice, invest in their courses. They
pay for themselves in a very short period of time.
